Who is MVLscope for?

Students beginning microscopy, instructors explaining image formation, and researchers reviewing measurement principles. Choose Foundations for guided explanations or Researcher Practice for method-focused review.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Yes. All currently available MVLscope laboratories and concept lessons are free to use, with no MVLscope account, registration or paid plan required. Optional live AI voice and chat use your own OpenAI API key and may incur charges from OpenAI. Guided lessons and preset explanations need no key. Planned lessons and labs are clearly labelled Coming soon.

Is JANA AI, and can I use MVLscope without it?

JANA includes optional live AI voice and chat in supported simulator labs. The homepage guide, concept lessons and disconnected preset guidance do not generate live AI replies. You can use the laboratories and lessons without connecting AI. AI-generated answers can be wrong; check scientific explanations against the lesson references and instrument training materials.

What is shared when I connect live AI?

Connecting uses your API key through the lab’s server to establish an OpenAI session. During a live session, microphone audio, questions and relevant simulator context may be sent to OpenAI. Read the connection notice in that lab for the specific data it shares. Enter API keys only in the labelled key field, and keep confidential research out of the conversation. End the session with the lab’s End voice or End session control.

Which device and browser should I use?

A laptop or desktop browser gives you the most room for the controls and instrument views. Chrome and the in-app browser have been used for lesson checks. Smaller layouts are supported, but complex laboratory work benefits from a larger screen.

How realistic are the simulations?

The lessons use stated scientific models to connect controls, images and measurements. Geometry, specimen appearance and motion may be simplified or exaggerated to explain a principle. Read each lesson’s research notes for assumptions, formulas, sources and effects that are not simulated.

Why is an animation paused or the 3D view not visible?

Some 3D views load only when requested or when they come into view. Select the labelled Load 3D control, then Animate light or the motion control. A reduced-motion preference pauses automatic motion. If WebGL is unavailable, use the page’s text explanations and available 2D controls.

Where are my lesson progress and records saved?

The concept lessons save progress in this browser on this device when browser storage is available. Progress does not automatically sync to another browser or device, and clearing site data can remove it. Download a record when you need a copy to keep.

Are lesson records accredited certificates?

No. They document activity and assessment within a teaching simulation. They are not identity-verified qualifications, accreditation or proof of competence on a real instrument.

Can I use MVLscope in teaching?

You can direct learners to the public lessons and laboratories, demonstrate them in class, and discuss the resulting observations. Links do not grant permission to republish source code, third-party images or other protected materials. For a coordinated pilot or adaptation, see the collaboration section below.

Does sharing reveal my answers or record?

The sharing controls include only the public page link and a short resource title. They do not attach your answers, measurements or saved record. You choose the destination and review the message in that service before sending.

Are manufacturers or universities endorsing MVLscope?

References to scientific sources and microscopy techniques do not imply an endorsement or partnership. Formal support will be identified explicitly if an agreement is established.

Janarthanan Ponraj is an electron microscopist with over 15 years of hands-on experience in microscopy, research support and instrument service. He created MVLscope to support self-paced learning, refresh microscopy knowledge, and make instrument principles easier to understand through interactive exploration.
